Atari 2600 (Retro Games)

Game Room

I've been big fan of a YouTube channel called "The 8-bit Guy" and especially when he restores old computer equipment and can actually find and repair a specific chip on a motherboard. I have a couple of these cartridges that are not working that I'm going to take apart, and see what if anything I can find out myself.

Update 7-29-2020

The answer to the question "What information can I find?" is "almost nothing". I really thought that I could get some hits on Google given all of the numbers on the chips but alas no. My guess is that the chip ID numbers that are printed on the ROM cartridges are unique for each batch, so without some master list from the chip maker, there is nothing that can be found out.

With that being said I did learn a few things so it was a win. Doing the research I was surprised at the variety in chip and boards used for Atari Cartridges. It seems there are far more variation than I have. The best page I found with information is this one.

Atari Compendium

I also learned the difference between ROM vs PROM vs EPROM vs EEPROM chips. How 4 digit date codes on chips work and the difference between IC and Blob chips.

104Z 16V Capacitor

This is the Chip and Board that started all of this. Somehow I've never seen an EPROM before and had no idea what it was. This particular board also had a second chip on it which was unique among those I had seen. Doing some research I learned what an EPROM chip was but I thought the other chip was for some other features untill I found this post on Atari Age. It seems legit to me.

"The additional chip is a 74LS04 inverter, which you would need if you were to use an EPROM on a standard 2600 cartridge board instead of an ordinary mask ROM."

This also gives me a hint about my next chip, Word Zapper.

This is the only other chip I have with a capacitor, and it happens to be the same capacitance as the one on the Venture Chip. What I wonder if MCM might be for Multi-chip module and SCM might be for Single Chip Module. If this is the case this might be an Integrated Circuit that has multiple chips inside. If one of those is a 74LS04 inverter then the other could be an PROM or similar.
